All students come to school with an abundance of historical, cultural, and economic knowledge from their home and community environments. When educators tap into this knowledge, they have the ability to make learning engaging and relevant to students. Asset-based approaches to education acknowledge students’ and families’ strengths and integrate these “funds of knowledge” from the home and community into the curriculum and schoolwide practices.
This unit plan and accompanying article applied an asset-based approach to integrate students’ “funds of knowledge” in two-way bilingual elementary classrooms. The instructional sequence in the unit plan engages students in inquiry-based learning of social studies concepts related to geography, foodways, music and dance, and art. Students gather funds of knowledge from their family to organically shape the social studies and language content of the unit plan. At the same time, students’ language acquisition is supported through language learning objectives that foster metalinguistic awareness. We are in the process of creating more assets-based unit plans.
