Content-based language instruction (CBI) is a global term, it means you are teaching content as well as a language. DLI is a type of CBI and thus this training was beneficial to them, but not all teachers can work in DLI contexts, so we wanted to train our teachers of ELs so that they would know the best practices for teaching English using a CBI approach. We trained our teachers using both the Sheltered instruction or SIOP fundamentals through the Center for Applied Linguistics and the Guided language acquisition design or GLAD through the BeGLAD organization. These approaches have had some promising results.
Here is how the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) describes SIOP:
“The SIOP Model* is a research-based and validated model of sheltered instruction that has been widely and successfully used across the U.S. for over 15 years Professional development in the SIOP Model helps teachers plan and deliver lessons that allow English learners to acquire academic knowledge as they develop English language proficiency.”
Here is how BeGLAD describes Project GLAD:
Project GLAD® was developed by Marcia Brechtel and Linnea Haley then field tested for nine years by the United States Department of Education. It is a professional development model in the area of academic language acquisition and literacy. Brechtel and Haley designed the strategies and model to specifically target and promote language skills, academic achievement, and cross-cultural skills with groundbreaking efficiency.
